Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac are poisonous plants that can cause a burning, itching rash to appear on the skin.
Causes
This rash is caused by the urushiol oil contained in the plant and can be caused by physical contact with any part of the plant. The rash can also be caused by touching an object, animal, or item of clothing that came in contact with the oil. The burning of the plant will allow bits of the oil to be expelled into the air, which can then come in contact with the skin and cause the rash to form.
Risk Factors
More than 80% of people are susceptible to this rash. The body may become more sensitive or less sensitive to the rash as a person ages.
Symptoms
It could be hours or days until the rash begins to appear and itching, hives, red or swollen skin, and blisters may also be present.
Diagnosis
A doctor will diagnose the rash by sight.
