Brian L. Johnson, M.D., FAAD, FACMS
The Virginia Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center is headed by Dr. Brian L. Johnson, a dermatologic surgeon who began his medical training at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. Upon graduation, he was designated a United States Navy medical officer. His Navy medical career was diversified, serving on three naval ships — USS Yellowstone AD-41, USS Kearsarge LHD-3 and USS Iwo Jima LHD-7. He also participated in major deployments and field assignments with the Seabees and Special Forces. The majority of his clinical time was spent at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.
Dr. Johnson studied dermatology at Johns Hopkins, and completed a Mohs Surgery Fellowship at Northwestern Skin Cancer Institute in Chicago, following in the footsteps of his father, renowned dermatologist and dermatopathologist Dr. Bernett L. Johnson Jr. After 24 years of service, Dr. Johnson retired from the Navy and established Virginia Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center.
Dr. Johnson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American College of Mohs Surgery, and the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. Dr. Johnson treats conditions of the skin, hair and nails. However, his emphasis is on the treatment of skin cancer using the Mohs Micrographic surgical technique, an advanced surgical procedure for the treatment of skin cancers.
Lisa Stirling, M.D.
Lisa Stirling, MD is a kind, knowledgeable, and compassionate board certified dermatologist. She practices medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology. Her interests include skin cancer, autoimmune conditions, acne, and psoriasis. She has years of experience with Botox, filler, and laser procedures. She has recently moved to the area with her husband, who is a Navy surgeon.
She completed her residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She attended medical school at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and has several published papers in peer-reviewed medical journals. She has been nominated as a Top Doctor in Encinitas, CA, where she has practiced for the last 8 years. She stays busy as a military spouse and has two young active boys. She enjoys trail running, hiking, and travel, and is an avid reader.
Theresa C. Talens, DNP, FNP-C
Dr. Theresa Talens is a dermatology nurse practitioner with her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. She is board certified through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioner Program. She has trained and worked along-side Dr. Brian Johnson, the lead Mohs surgeon at VDSCC, for nearly 10 years. She holds a unique role as being the sole nurse practitioner at Anne Arundel Dermatology specializing in surgery and procedures.
Dr. Talens has performed more than 10,000+ cutaneous surgeries throughout her years of practicing becoming proficient at performing surgery on the skin. Her knowledge and experience allows her to serve as a clinical preceptor for nurse practitioner and physician assistant students. She has also been a guest lecturer for the only Masters leveled Surgical Assistant Program (MSA) nationwide at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). She is a member with the National Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Society of Dermatology Nurse Practitioners, and Dermatology Nurses’ Association.

Robert Masters, FNP-BC
Robert J. Masters, FNP-BC is a board certified nurse practitioner who completed his undergraduate training at Colorado State University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences and minors in Physical Education and Secondary Education. He then graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and was commissioned in the United States Navy in the Nurse Corps. After several stateside and overseas assignments, he was sent to graduate school and completed his Master of Science degree in Nursing from Hampton University. He has been certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Family Nurse Practitioner since 2000.
Mr. Masters was the first ever Family Nurse Practitioner to be credentialed as a medical provider in Dermatology in the United States Navy. After serving his country for 20 years on active duty service and one year of Government Service, Mr. Masters retired from the Navy and joined former colleague and mentor Dr. Brian L. Johnson, founder and medical director of Virginia Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, in 2007. He is qualified to diagnose, prescribe and treat patients of all age ranges in the field of Dermatology and to perform dermatologic surgery as well.
Mr. Masters is married to the former Mana Krismer of Chicago, who is enjoying retirement and mastering the fine art of quilting. They have 3 sons: Nicholas a law student at Wake Forest University who will matriculate into the US Army JAG Corps upon graduation, Robert Jr. a 2nd year Civil Engineering student at VMI on a 4 year Navy ROTC Scholarship, and Nathaniel who will study Engineering at UVA also on a 4 year Navy ROTC Scholarship.
Lorie A. Tengco Conza, NP-C
Lorie A. Tengco Conza, NP-C is a board certified family nurse practitioner through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program. She earned her Bachelor and Master of Science in Nursing from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1992, she enlisted in the Navy as a hospital corpsman then received a Navy ROTC Nursing scholarship in 1993. Mrs. Conza was commissioned in 1997 and served more than ten years as a nurse corps officer working at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) and Naval Ambulatory Care Center Newport, Rhode Island. She worked as a nurse practitioner in a general and cosmetic dermatology setting for over three years before joining the team at Virginia Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center. She is passionate about providing the best care available; she refines her skills and knowledge by attending conferences and completing continuing medical education (CME) activities focused on dermatological care of the skin, hair, and nails.
Mrs. Conza's professional memberships include: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; Dermatology Nurses’ Association Nurse Practitioner Society; Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing; Golden Key Honor International Society; and Philippine Nurses Association of Virginia. Nursing Honors & Awards include: Dina Estaris Nursing Scholarship Award (2010); Diane Keefer Scholarship Award (2010); Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2004 & 2007); NMCP’s Senior Nurse of the Quarter (2006); & ODU’s Nursing Leadership & Community Service Award (1997).
Mrs. Conza is happily married with three children and enjoys volunteering in community events, traveling around the world, and practicing hot yoga.
Kelly Barriault, PA-C
Kelly Barriault was a Richmond, Virginia native prior to her acceptance into the Physician Assistant program at Eastern Virginia Medical School. In 2002 Kelly graduated from Radford University with a B.S. in Biology and a member of the Biology Honors Society (Beta Beta Beta). Kelly received her Master’s degree from EVMS in 2005 and it was during her clinical rotations that she found her passion for Dermatology. She enjoys educating patients about their skin and performing skin cancer screenings. “I am lucky to work in a field that I love. I am driven by my relationships with patients and I can’t imagine doing anything else. Nothing makes me happier than seeing patients improve and achieve their healthcare goals.” Kelly has worked exclusively in the field of Dermatology since 2005 and her skills include both clinical and cosmetic aspects of Dermatology.
Kelly resides in Chesapeake with her husband and their two girls, two dogs and five chickens. When Kelly is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family. Some of her past times include going to the beach, listening to music,singing, baking, and doing arts and crafts with her girls.
Cynthia Ferguson PA-C
Cynthia Ferguson, MHS, PA-C is a board-certified physician assistant. Cynthia Ferguson, MHS, PA-C has over 12 years of clinical practice as a dermatology physician assistant. Ms. Ferguson is a member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants. Her areas of clinical interest include preventative care, ethnic skin disorders, hair loss, atopic dermatitis, and acne. Her practice includes medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology.
Karen Brace, Clinical Trichologist Practitioner
Karen Brace is a Clinical Trichologist Practitioner, certified by the American Medical Certification Association. She studied Trichology at the National Trichology Training Institute located in Stockbridge, GA. Trichology is the scientific and biological study of hair loss as it relates to poor diets, environmental and hormonal changes. As a trichologist, Karen identifies scalp and skin disorder, scalp dehydration and other conditions. She is trained to exfoliate the scalp and detoxify the hair shaft.
Karen is also a Licensed Cosmetologist of 21 years and a Cosmetologist Instructor of 6 years, with a certificate as a Pharmacy Technician from Norfolk State University. As a Pharmacy Technician Karen gained knowledge in the effects of medication on the hair, including over 300 medications that are known to cause hair loss. Karen's motto is "healing for the hair." Karen is a mother of four, and resides with her husband and family in Chesapeake, VA.
Dawn McEnroe, RN, Advanced Nurse Injector & Skin Care Specialist
Dawn McEnroe is a board certified registered nurse who completed her training at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center. She grew up locally in Virginia Beach. She has been a nurse for over eighteen years and initially specialized in cardiovascular disease. Dawn has been the lead Clinical Research Coordinator on over twenty new drug and device studies. Her interest in cosmetic nursing led her first to working with lasers treating all skin conditions. She received additional training in skin rejuvenation and other anti-aging modalities and now practices as a Certified Nurse Injector.
As an advanced nurse injector, Dawn can provide patients with a non-surgical alternative to soften fine lines and give back lost volume to aging skin. BOTOX® Cosmetic, JUVÉDERM®, and RADIESSE® are just some of the products utilized for these procedures. Dawn remains current on the ever-changing Aesthetic industry through frequent continuing education. New products and procedures are being launched every day. Crystal Kimpel RN
Crystal Kimpel is a Registered Nurse with 15 years of experience. She attended school in Hampton Roads at Thomas Nelson and Key Business School. Crystal initially specialized in surgical and orthopedic nursing; but she always had a fondness of cosmetics and aesthetics, and has now been working in the industry for the last several years. Crystal is certified in a wide variety of lasers, and is an Allergan-certified injector of dermal fillers and neurotoxins. She is passionate about skincare and helping people feel confident and beautiful. Crystal has attended many aesthetic conferences and continues to stay up-to-date on the latest in beauty trends, skincare products, and cosmetic techniques and equipment. Crystal lives in Hampton Roads and comes from a military family. She is a proud mom to one daughter and one grandson, and enjoys a healthy lifestyle, yoga, travel, and diving.
